What Really Happens in Sex Therapy?

Here’s the sitch, I do not see couples having sex. I do not watch individuals having sex. I do not see any of the sex happening. I don't have sex with my clients at all. As a sex therapist, I'm clinically trained to treat sexual health disorders as well as be able to help people in sex therapy, couples sex therapy, and relationship therapy. There are different types of things that they might be coming in and seeing me for so, it’s important to debunk this myth. No, I don't have sex with my clients. There's no sex that goes on the screen or anything like that in sex therapy and I do not watch my clients have sex or anything like that. No, no, no, no, no. Keep reading to understand the steps in my process as a sex therapist working in Minneapolis, MN.

What to Expect in Sex Therapy With Me!

Here’s my sex therapy process & what really happens in sex therapy in Minneapolis, MN…

  • People book a 15-minute phone consultation with me

  • We discuss what they’re seeking sex therapy for, my therapeutic style, sex therapy interventions, sex therapy exercises I use, scheduling, rates of service, and goodness of fit

  • If people decide to continue with me, they book an initial intake appointment, where I send informed consent documents, my sex therapy intake assessment, teletherapy communication agreements, then we meet, I assess for any sex therapy diagnoses or mental health disorders and then the session is done

  • In the next session or two, we discuss goals in sex therapy. I ask people what’s their why for wanting to meet with me and if sex therapy did exactly what we needed to do, how could we tell?

  • From here, we talk about if we want any rituals for the beginning or end of sessions moving forward.

  • Then we focus on sex therapy exercises in and outside of the session. These can be various interventions and tools related to sex, shame, self, and more!

  • Then we keep focusing on goals week to week, change if something isn’t working, and do real talk therapy aka discuss our therapeutic alignment and rapport.

  • Honestly, sometimes clients just need to talk, be vulnerable, and open up in therapy. They’re looking for a safe space, and for me, I love stories, tangents, and how they relate back to our goals in sex therapy. I’ll probably go off on a mini tangent when I explain things too, don’t worry, I got you! :)

    And much, much more!
