We are trained in a humanistic approach to take ever bit of research study, podcast, or story, with a grain of salt. Therapists and sex therapists know that research doesn’t include all. That’s why we hesitate to give an actual answer. Another reason I do is because I have been trained in Systemic Sex Therapy. What’s that? Honestly, I prefer to call it Holistic Sexuality. This is where as a sex therapist I use an assessment tool that asks not only about sexual health and wellness, but also areas of stress, family of origin dynamics, genetic factors, biology, mental health diagnoses, medical diagnoses, medications, and more that can influence sexual libido. Now, let's tackle the ever-elusive question – how often should I have sex? Guess what? There's no magic number. Your frequency of sexual activity is as unique as your taste in music. It depends on your desires, your schedule, and, most importantly, what feels right for you. It’s hard to trust research to give an accurate number of how often we should have sex because everyone’s sexual libido is different and that’s okay. Not to mention, everyone’s sexuality is different too. If you’re Ace or Asexual, you're more than likely not going to be having sex that often. What is okay and what’s not okay is to not include these considerations when people throw out a number with this question. Forget the pressure to conform to some arbitrary standard. Some may thrive on daily escapades, while others prefer a more leisurely pace. The key is to find a rhythm that aligns with your physical and emotional well-being.
