We're going to break things down on personal lube and understand the four P's of what is important when it comes to personal lube overall. As a sex therapist in Minneapolis, I work a lot with individuals and couples in sex therapy that are seeking help predominantly on pleasure. With pleasure being different for every person in sex therapy, desire discrepancies can come up quite often. Most of the time this can be related to multiple things. Be it anxiety, depression, burnout, life stressors, body image, low self-esteem, poor communication skills, or even pain. As a sex therapist, there are a lot of other reasons that may be related to someone's sexual libido and desire discrepancies in our relationship. I definitely want to make sure as a couples sex therapist, individual sex therapist, and sexual wellness coach, I want to talk briefly about those different factors that can either enhance or diminish libido. How is Personal Lube Helpful?
First, let's talk a little bit about personal lube. Personal lube is something that can help an individual’s or couple’s sex life. Personal lube has many properties and purposes of being able to use it. There are so many positive benefits of lube overall. Some benefits of lube are increasing pleasure reducing pain, heightening chances of an orgasm, there are yummy, satisfying tastes, there are heating and cooling properties, and there are different types of personal lube that you can pair with different kinds of sex toys. There is no shame on the personal lube game! As a couples sex therapist, and individual sex therapist, I work with folks on figuring out what type of lube is best for them.
What You Need to Consider When Selecting Personal Lube
Here are my sex therapist recommendations when thinking about personal lube, you need to consider the four P's of lube, purpose places pleasure, and play. Let's break down these four P's in order to find the best personal lube for your sexy self-care routine.
Purpose: What it’s for, sensation, cooling/warming, etc.
What is the purpose of the lube? Is it for sensation does it have cooling or warming properties? Is it to enhance any type of particular pleasure?
Places: Where it’s being used
Where are the places where the personal lube is being used? Is it primarily for genital stimulation? Is it for all-around body play? Is there something specific in a particular place that the loop is being used sexually?
Pleasure: Kinds that you enjoy, taste, flavors, texture, etc.
Ask yourself what kind of lubes you enjoy. Be it the taste the flavor, the texture, the properties or the feeling of it? Personal lube is pleasurable.
Play: types of sexual activities you’re engaging in
Ask yourself what types of sexual activities you are engaging in. It is important to pick a personal lube that will work with various sex toys, positions, and other things you may be experiencing mentoring during sex.
What is the Best Personal Lube for Me?
Only YOU can answer this! Your yum may be different than other people’s out there, even different than a sex therapist who may recommend certain types. So it’s best to play around, do your research, and scroll below for journal questions for you to reflect on.
