September Series: Safe Sex Tips, Pt. 2
Happy Sexual Awareness Month week two!
Today’s sexual health topic for safe sex tips in this series is going to be on the topic of lube. Why personal lubricant you ask? Many couples and individuals use lube and it is important to talk through the benefits of these types of sex tips for marriage and sex tips for relationships, in the words of Emily Nagoski, the wetter the better! Sex Therapists in Minneapolis discuss safe sex tips regarding personal lubrication with their clients quite often. In this blog, I’ll share my personal favorite sex therapist in Minneapolis tips regarding places you can go to purchase lube, and more safe sex tips when thinking through different types of personal lubrication and finding the right fit.
What is Lube?
This is definitely important to know! Personal lubricant is a liquid gelly-like product that individuals and couples may use while having sex to reduce friction, prevent pain, and irritation. When using personal lubrication, it can be important to consider several questions and safe sex tips depending on the activity.
What is a Good Lube?
That depends on the type of activity and I have some safe sex tips/questions for you to consider. Are you incorporating sex toys? Is it for solo masturbation? Are you having penetrative sex? What is the purpose of using personal lubricant? Do you or your partner(s) have any allergies? As a sex therapist in Minneapolis, I urge you to think through these questions first, and then the type of personal lubricant will come second. When thinking about what is a good lube, remember, there are wonderful personal lubricants out there! Some brands I think are flame is, Shibari Personal Lubricant, Sliquid Organic in an Aloe type, and Astroglide has been a pretty popular brand for those with sensitive skin. If you’re wanting to purchase personal lubricant and wanting to support local, check out Smitten Kitten or Bondesque in Uptown Minneapolis Minnesota. They’re great stores and I highly recommend checking them out! Just remember these safe sex tips when considering what is a good lube for you personally.
Types of Personal Lubricants
1-Water-based: lowers the risk of irritation, can evaporate easily, stick, gummy mess with heat, compatible with contraceptives, beginners start here!
2-Oil-based: can use for anal penetration, cannot use a condom with this because oil breaks down the protection of latex.
3-Silicone-based: lasts longer than you do, stick, gummy powder on hand, combined with an expensive dildo, and silicone toys can ruin, wreck, or melt toys, use with any form of protection.
What can I use instead of Lube?
What a fabulous sexual health topic question! Especially when it comes to discussing safe sex tips, we don’t want you to throw something that could be potentially dangerous on your genitals. Ouch! There’s plenty of options of what you can use instead of lube, such as, coconut oil is a natural type of lubricant that can be supplemented, aloe vera is a new one that is trending out there or other natural lube products that are vegan and paraben-free if you’re worried about chemicals. I get it if you are!
