The Top 6 Myths about Therapy in Minneapolis

Minneapolis is a place where folks seek out services for so many things, but therapy in Minneapolis is not something that’s talked about much! You might think, counseling in my city is exactly what happens in movies or on tv shows. Will Ferrell in Step Brothers “dates,” his therapist, Josh in Young & Hungry kisses his counselor, or the Simpsons getting shock therapy or zapped by Dr. Marvin Monroe. Spoiler alert, therapy in Minneapolis is not like media. Sorry not sorry, but I don’t shock my clients with machines, kiss them, and definitely would not date them. You probably found therapists in Minneapolis that are legit and you probably have a million and one questions, totes normal!

I am here to help you understand the myths about counseling in Minneapolis. My goal is to open up the conversation about myths regarding therapy in Minneapolis and educate about counseling in Minneapolis instead.

Here are The Top 6 Myths about Therapy in Minneapolis…

Myth #1: Therapy in Minneapolis is like talking to a bartender or hairstylist, right? #WRONG! Counselors in Minneapolis are clinically trained to implement specific tasks and interventions in order to help you with your goals sweetie! We apply theories we’ve learned, the various workshops and training we’ve taken, the feedback we’ve gotten through supervisors, and consultation from other therapists in Minneapolis. Sure, bartenders and hairstylists might listen like counselors in Minneapolis, but bartenders may give you another drink, hairstylists cut and/or color your hair, whereas, therapists in Minneapolis do not.

Myth #2: I’ll feel better after one session with my counselor in Minneapolis, no problem, I got this! Therapy in Minneapolis takes time. One session is not going to do the trick of changing something you’ve been struggling with for a while or a long-term goal you have in mind. It would nice if therapy in Minneapolis were like a doctor’s visit with check-ins, but even with physical health, you may sometimes need to go back in for things to get better. The same goes for counseling in Minneapolis. Me personally, I tell folks I don’t do drive-thru therapy in Minneapolis, where you head to McDonald’s around the corner, go through the drive-thru, place your order, get your happy meal with golden nuggets, then boom it’s see you in a month! Now I really want a cheeseburger, nuggs, and some fries, damn I need a new analogy for therapy in Minneapolis not being like a drive-thru because I’m hungry now! It’s true though, counseling in Minneapolis is a time commitment weekly, in order to achieve your hustling goals sooner rather than later! The better outcomes for therapy in Minneapolis to work is consistently meeting on a weekly basis, let’s get to work!

Myth #3: All therapists in Minneapolis will accept my insurance and it’s practically free. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me if therapy in Minneapolis is free, I would probably be close to a millionaire by now. Not all therapists in Minneapolis accept insurance. This may be due to how they manage burnout with not calling/billing insurance weekly, how counselors in Minneapolis run their business, the ability to treat more clients in a week, or for sex therapists in Minneapolis like me, insurance doesn’t pay for sex therapy codes. Before calling a therapist in Minneapolis, check to see if they take your insurance, if not, check for out of network benefits through your insurance plan, if not that then at the time of year where you look into insurance benefits, maybe consider the possibility of getting an HSA/FSA for money to build up into that account, especially if your deductible is high. Therapists in Minneapolis are people too, we have to earn a living and manage our counseling businesses in Minneapolis as well as those bartenders and hairstylists.

Myth #4: I can call and email my counselor in Minneapolis at any time and they’ll respond! Nope, please don’t do that LOL! Just telling y’all right now, if you give me a call at 6-7 pm or later, I’m not answering it, Bachelorette is on Mondays and my evenings are devoted to self-care like many other humans out there! I’ll definitely return your call the next day or when I am back in the office if I am gone. Therapists in Minneapolis have different schedules, some counselors in Minneapolis may have strict office hours, and others may have times where they tell you they are in or out. Therapy in Minneapolis is not about your counselor being at your beckon call, more about helping you find ways during the week where you can continue on that session, and implement what was discussed. Here’s what several counselors in Minneapolis will tell you, keep a journal and if you have something to process at the next session, jot it down! We want to hear and we cannot do this via email or voicemail because we want to give you the time devoted to these thoughts, ideas, or concerns and support you as best we can. Nothing against you, I love that you’re doing work and recognizing that this may be helpful, way to go!!

Myth #5: All therapy in Minneapolis is essentially the same no matter who I see. All therapists in Minneapolis have different approaches and styles to therapy. There is no cookie-cutter technique to counseling in Minneapolis. Even two sex therapists in Minneapolis may be trained in the same treatment modalities and still do things differently. Therapy in Minneapolis can change based on that counselor in Minnesota. Googling therapists near me versus sex therapy in Minneapolis you may find differences even when you look into provider’s profiles, websites, and their language. For me, I don’t believe in sugar-coating shit, which you may have picked up on, I believe that adding the word fuck, cuss words, and humor can be healing for therapy in Minneapolis.

Myth #6: Therapy in Minneapolis is exactly like what I see on Social Media, on TV, or in movies. Kind of addressed this one, but nope nope nope, it’s not! There are so many myths out there in our society about how therapists are portrayed on television. Therapy in Minneapolis is not like those movies and shows I quoted earlier. If your counselor in Minneapolis is trying to kiss or date you, you have a right as the client to report that provider. It does happen, and most ethic codes therapists in Minneapolis have to follow do not allow us to date clients, until after so many years. Do I know the number off the top of my head? No, but it’s a fucking while. Therapists in Minneapolis will also not use Electroconvulsive Therapy AKA “Shock Therapy,” treatments, unless that’s what the provider does and you consent to that, cool, otherwise that’s typically not the case. Don’t believe everything you see, read, or hear about counseling in Minneapolis, because it’s likely untrue, especially when it’s in a Will Ferrell movie. Sorry Step Brothers, quoting you all day every day is still my love language, and this therapist in Minneapolis is not about that dating her client’s life LOL!
